Is
there any set way of making one's Holy Hour?
No set way is
suggested. Complete liberty is encouraged in this
regard; each one can follow his own personal attraction
in prayer. Mental and vocal prayer, as a rule, make up
the adoration hour, with a short time for spiritual
reading. The Rosary, which can include mental as well as
vocal prayer, and which also fulfills one of the
essential requests of the Fatima message, is a favorite
prayer. The Holy Cure of Ars indicated his views
regarding prayer in these words of wisdom: "To pray
well, there is no need to talk a lot. One knows that the
good Lord is there in the holy tabernacle. One opens
one's heart to Him, one rejoices in His presence. This
is the best prayer."
What spiritual
reading is recommended during the adoration hour?
- The New
Testament
- the Imitation
of Christ
- St. Alphonsus
Liguori's Visits to the Blessed Sacrament
- St. Julian
Eymatrd's little books on the Blessed Sacrament
- Fr. Francis
LeBuffe's My Changeless Friend, etc.
A word of caution
in regard to spiritual reading. Let only a small portion
of the hour be taken up with spiritual reading. One
doesn't visit a good friend, pull out a book, and read
it while ignoring his host. The same can be applied to a
visit with the best of Friends. Spiritual reading should
only be an aid or means leading to prayer.■
