Naga City: The Apostolate of Mary

by Staff of Immaculate Mediatrix On-line

Naga City: 'Caritas Mariae' (Marian Friary of Our Lady of Peñafrancia)

The FI had also opened a Marian House in the Diocese of Nueva Caceres in the Bicol Region. The Diocese is under the Episcopate of His Excellency Msgr. Leonardo Legaspi, O.P., D.D. The Marian House was named after the Patroness of the Bicol region, "Our Lady of Peñafrancia."The Institute was formally accepted in the Diocese of Nueva Caceres in June of 1 993. Fr. Bernardine Ma. Pedroso, FI, went to the Diocese to represent the Institute before the Bishop for approval.

The community began under Fra. Sebastian Ma. Bejer, FI as the first superior of the house. This became a clerical house for the institute in the whole Philippines. After Fra. Sebastian left for America in 1994, he was followed by Fr. Michael Ma. Virola, FI.

After two years, the FI in Naga was busy putting up a radio station as part of its apostolate. It was later called "Caritas Mariae, (98.3 DWMM FM "The Mother’s Touch")" a 100 percent Catholic Marian-Makabayan radio station. Fr. Carmelo Ma. Pulayan became the priest in—charge of this work.Fr. John Carlo Maria Rosales, FI later became the Superior of the House in Naga and as the director of the Radio. One of the main concerns of the FI in Naga is the formation of the Third Order Franciscans of the Immaculate (TOFI). While the selling (or donation from people) religious articles and materials, radio apostolate, and visiting the sick and the prisoners are just but some of the apostolate of the Tertiary assisted by the FI.

Our Lady Coredemptrix in San Felipe

In 1 998, the FI in Naga started the construction of its new Marian House located at San Felipe, Naga City, about 4 kilometers away from the City proper. The construction included the transfer of the Radio Station to its permanent location. Finally, on September 20, 1999, the community in Caritas (Located in Barlin, Naga City Proper, in front of the Metropolitan Cathedral) transferred to its new Convent in San Felipe, Naga City with a new church bearing the title, "Our Lady Coredemptrix".

Regarding the Church in Naga, its main function is not just a place where Holy Mass is celebrated but other ministerial functions of the priest there such as confessions, spiritual directions, Eucharistic adoration and benediction.

Together with the new location, the Radio Station acquired a new call number of DWRV (Radio Veritas) with the same frequency number.
With regard to the MIM members In Naga City, there are about 10 (more or less) professed Tertiaries, 15—20 Novices, 10—15 postulants, and a number of aspirants. More numbers are included under the MIM I & II. All of them are active members taking part in the mission of the Immaculate.
