Brief History of the Marian Friary
T
he Marian friary of "Our Lady, Queen of the Seraphic Order" was officially opened on December 15, 1992 (Feast of Our Lady, Queen of the Seraphic Order) by Bishop Sean O'Malley, OFM Cap, now the bishop and cardinal of the diocese of Boston. Located in downtown New Bedford, the friary offers everyday the Holy sacrifice of the Mass and the Sacrament of Penance for the faithful. from 1994 up to the present, there is an interior seminary for the friars called to the priesthood. From 2002, the friar students, after their two years of philosophy, continue their study of theology in Italy.
"Our Lady's Chapel" is the name of the actual sanctuary which was named ever since its foundation in 1950 by the Friars Minor who built and and used to live in New Bedford. The sanctuary was closed in 1992 and the Friars Minor moved to Providence while it was reopened by the Franciscans of the Immaculate on December 15 of the same year.
The friars hear numerous confessions everyday especially the First Fridays and Saturdays of the month as well as during the periods of Advent and Lent. They also give spiritual direction to the faithful especially to members of the MIM and
Third Order of the Immaculate. From 2003, the friars started a program of Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration which has at the present almost 200 members. They take turn day and night seven days a week and 24 hours a day, adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. The sanctuary becomes a place of prayer and recollection for the busy inhabitants and office workers of New Bedford.

See our on-line catalog of books for more information about these titles.
Internet Apostolate
Imitating the example of St. Maximilian Kolbe, the friars launched its Marian and Catholic evangelization through the new technology of the Internet website which was established in 1996. It continues to expand according to demands and has affected many lives including the the discovery of religious and priestly vocations.
Mass Media Apostolate
The friars undertake with their Third Order members and the Sisters of the Immaculate the production of video and audio cassettes of conferences and music. This materializes the goal of St. Maximilian M. Kolbe to let the Immaculate known and loved for the extension of the Kingdom of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in the world today.

Brief History of the Marian Friary
T
he history of the foundation of the North American mission of the Franciscans of the Immaculate began in December 1990 when the first friars arrived and took residence in a small room in the Holy Apostle Seminary in Cromwell, CT. In the beginning of 1991, the friars transfered to a small house near the seminary for a monthly rent paid by benefactors. There the first vocations came who were attracted to the Franciscan-Marian life and in 1992, in order to accommodate more space for vocations, they transferred in a bigger house which was given for use to the friars by the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady, Mother of the Church in Baltic, CT.
Followed by a donation of a piece of land on the part of a Catholic benefactress, Eileen Brown, and after having received permission from the Bishop and with other difficulties, in the autumn of 1998, the friars began the construction of a novitiate and the Mother House of the American mission. The work was finished in August 2000. Hence, the friars from Baltic moved to the new friary in August 19, 2000. Bishop Hart of Norwich blessed the new community in the presence of the Father Founders, Fr. Stefano M. Manelli and Fr. Gabriel M. Pellettieri. The same bishop consecrated the chapel constructed in English Franciscan Gothic style in August 25, 2001.
The Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of Guadalupe has an old history. That edifice was erected initially by the Presbyterians in Tudor style in 1853 and then abandoned in 1869. The local parish of the Immaculate Conception, which administered to the poor working class of the area, without a Church, obtained the structure and renovated it for Catholic services. It was consecrated in 1909 and remained in use until 1972 after a fire incident; it was abandoned and practically left without having it repaired.
With the arrival of the friars in 1993, the work of restoration of the chapel began. The new chapel was solemnly consecrated by Bishop Hart in August 25, 2001 and in October 28, 2001 it became the center of Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

Brief History of the Marian Friary
M
ount St. Francis was established in 1973 by a Franciscan Conventual, Fr. Stephen Valenta, of the Province of the Immaculate Conception (USA). With the help of lay volunteers, a convent was erected, a chapel and 13 cottages/hermitages in the site of 150 acres mostly hills and grass that are ideal for contemplative life. The property was sold to our community by the Franciscan Conventuals in January 1998 and a montyh after on February our friars officially took residence in the Marian Friary of Our Lady, "Spouse of the Holy Spirit". From the period on the friary became the formation house of postulants and a place for retreats. The place was officially blessed in August 14, 2006 with the newly constructed friary of 18 cells.
